Hyperinflation and Secretion Clearance Therapy

Overview

The Pulmonis Learning Project is an advanced educational initiative aimed at supporting respiratory therapy learners as they prepare for their board examinations. Our data has highlighted a consistent trend where a significant number of learners miss the passing threshold by a narrow margin of 15 points or less.

In response to the challenge faced by respiratory learners preparing for their board exams, a comprehensive series of modules were created based on the exam matrix. This solution was crafted to address the specific need for efficient and effective study aids that cater to learners at risk of falling just short of the passing score. The solution comprises three key components: an eLearning module with knowledge checks, and an Essentials Recap video.

My Process

This text-based storyboard helped me align the information in a sequential manner and pre-decide on the Rise block types that needed to be used in the main course. 
After deciding on the content and the Rise block types to be used, I implemented it in the course to check if the flow was correct. After several SME interactions and approval, I then selected appropriate pictures that were in tandem to the content. 
Some of the key instructions and knowledge checks were added post SME approval, during the course development. This allowed me to think more creatively since I did the storyboard and the main course development myself. 

eLearning Module

The eLearning module is the core of our solution, designed to be an interactive and self-paced online learning experience. The content is structured around the most critical topics, distilled from the areas where learners commonly lose points.

Essentials Recap Video

Recognizing the time constraints faced by learners, particularly those approaching their exam dates, I developed an Essentials Recap video. This high-impact video is a concise summary of the most crucial Hyperinflation and Secretion Clearance Therapy concepts, designed for rapid review. It presents the must-know information in a clear and memorable format, allowing for quick recall during exams.

Interactivity

This section on Postural Positioning has been created via Storyline. This locked menu is created in order to ensure each tab is accessed and the information is retained before moving forward in the module. Check out the eLearning project to view. 

Implementation and Accessibility

The solution was implemented through a user-friendly learning management system (LMS) that is accessible on multiple devices, enabling learners to study anytime, anywhere. The design follows universal design principles to cater to a diverse range of learning preferences and needs.

Knowledge Checks

To reinforce learning and ensure retention, the module includes periodic knowledge checks. These checks are strategically placed after each key concept to provide immediate feedback and are styled similarly to board exam questions. They serve both as a learning tool and as a gauge for the student’s understanding of the material.
  Real life scenario-based questions have been added as practice knowledge checks to facilitate understanding of the theory and link it to its application.

Effectiveness of the Solution

The eLearning support lesson has been tested with a group of learners, showing promising results in bridging the knowledge gap. Learners have reported increased confidence in the Hyperinflation and Secretion Clearance Therapy topic, and preliminary program data indicates an improvement in scores that surpasses the previous 15-point deficit. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, especially regarding the Essentials Recap video, which many found to be an invaluable last-minute study tool.
